Although Chlamydia is the most common bacterial Sexually Transmitted Disease in the United States it is known as a silent disease. This means that most men and women infected with Chlamydia have no symptoms at all. If chlamydia does cause symptoms they usually occur within 1 to 3 weeks of contact. When chlamydia causes symptoms, what chlamydia looks like therefore depends upon what part of the body is infected.
When woman do have symptoms they may include a malodorous discharge or discomfort with urination. Other woman may experience lower abdominal pain, low back pain, fever, chills, nausea, painful intercourse or bleeding between periods.

When men have signs or symptoms they consist of penile discharge or painful urination. Some men will experience itching or burning around the the opening of the penis. Pain and testicular swelling may occur but this is uncommon.
